One of our features tracked Cold War era vehicles for America’s Tank Demo Weekend on July 25-26, 2026 is the M88 Recovery Vehicle… more info on the event at the link in our bio or at: www.americanheritagemuseum.org/event/americas-tank-demo-weekend-july/ — The M88 Recovery Vehicle was developed in the late 1950s to provide the U.S. Army with a dedicated armored vehicle capable of recovering damaged tanks under combat conditions. Based on the chassis of the M48 Patton tank, the M88 entered service in 1961 and quickly became an essential part of armored formations. Equipped with a powerful winch, hydraulically operated A-frame boom, and front-mounted dozer blade, it could tow, lift, and repair disabled vehicles while protecting its crew from enemy fire. The M88 saw extensive service during the Vietnam War and has supported U.S. and allied forces in every major conflict since, including Operations Desert Storm, Iraqi Freedom, and Enduring Freedom. Continuous modernization led to the improved M88A1, M88A2 HERCULES (Heavy Equipment Recovery Combat Utility Lift and Evacuation System), and the latest M88A3, each designed to recover increasingly heavy main battle tanks.
