This Series H has scored 100-points in judging after restoration and is a Senior National First Prize Winner.
Chevrolet Motor Company was founded by a partnership between Louis Chevrolet, a French race car driver and designer, and William C. Durant, the founder of General Motors. In 1914 the Series H was the first Chevrolet to be sold under $1,000. An electric starter and lights were optional. Both accessories were available for an additional $125.
In 1916 Chevrolet took aim directly at the Ford Model T with the Model 490. The car was named after its price of $490 which happened to be what a Model T cost. The Model 490 was a great success with 4,661 orders placed within 17 days of its introduction, rocketing Chevrolet into 7th place in the industry.
In 1923 the new Chevrolet and GM owner Alfred Sloan decided that tackling Ford head on was suicide. Instead, Sloan created a new price point for Chevrolet, low but not the lowest, a step up in price and value. In 1927 Chevrolet built over 1.7 million cars and for the first time since 1906 a car other than a Ford was number one in the industry.
