DESCRIPTION:Join the American Heritage Museum for a special History After Hours presentation exploring the evolution of the main battle tank from the closing years of World War II through the modern era. \nMuseum Hours: 5:00 p.m.–8:00 p.m. | Presentation: 6:00 p.m.–7:30 p.m.\nSergeant First Class Gregg Pomerleau\, U.S. Army (Ret.)\, the museum’s resident specialist on Cold War-era armored vehicles\, will lead guests on a walking tour through the museum’s galleries and outdoor tank operations ramp. Using historic tanks from the museum’s permanent displays and recently donated Cold War vehicles from its operational collection\, Pomerleau will explain how armor\, firepower\, mobility\, targeting systems\, crew protection\, and battlefield doctrine advanced from the 1950s to the present day. \nFeatured vehicles will include the: \nM26 Pershing\nM47 Patton\nM48 Patton\nM60 Main Battle Tank\nM60A1\nM60A2\, equipped with the M162 gun/launcher\nM551 Sheridan\nM1A1 Abrams \nAbout the Presenter\nGregg Pomerleau began his military career in 1980 with the Massachusetts Army National Guard\, initially serving as a tank driver. Inspired by the camaraderie\, discipline\, and sense of purpose he found in military service\, he volunteered for active duty and spent eight years in the United States Army. \nDuring his 20-year military career\, Pomerleau mastered nearly every position inside a tank\, serving as a driver\, gunner\, commander\, and troop master gunner. While stationed in Germany during the Cold War\, he completed more than thirty 30-day tours along the Czech and East German borders. He later returned to the Massachusetts Army National Guard\, where he led tank and artillery platoons. \nPomerleau retired in 2000 after two decades of combined service. For more than seven years\, he has served as the American Heritage Museum’s Senior Docent for the post-World War II galleries. He is also a proud member of Abrams Company\, 4th Battalion\, United States Brotherhood of Tankers. \nImportant Visitor Information\nThis program will be presented as a walking tour inside the museum and outdoors on the tank operations ramp. Guests should wear comfortable footwear and be prepared to walk and stand during the presentation. Water bottles are permitted. \nHistory After Hours takes place on the first Thursday of each month\, opening the American Heritage Museum from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. for evening admission and special programming. SUMMARY:WWII in the Pacific Re-Enactment Weekend
DESCRIPTION:Infantry representing Japanese and American forces will clash in this extraordinary living history event. Camps will be set up with authentic gear and appearance. WWII aircraft will fly in the battle (weather permitting). \nThe Okinawa campaign\, fought from April to June 1945\, was one of the bloodiest battles of World War II and the largest amphibious assault in the Pacific Theater. Located just 350 miles from mainland Japan\, Okinawa was seen as a critical stepping stone for a potential invasion of Japan itself. The campaign involved intense fighting between U.S. forces and the Japanese Imperial Army\, including kamikaze attacks\, entrenched resistance\, and fierce ground combat. Over 12\,000 American troops were killed\, and Japanese military and civilian casualties were staggering\, with estimates reaching over 100\,000. The battle highlighted the devastating cost of war and influenced the U.S. decision to use atomic bombs in hopes of avoiding a similarly deadly invasion of Japan. \nPacific war camps and aircraft will be set up and on display through the day. The battle re-enactment starts around 1 PM. \nAll three museums will be open: The American Heritage Museum\, The Historic Aviation Hangar and Classic Automobile Barn. This is a unique opportunity to see some of the world’s most rare aircraft\, extraordinary American classic automobiles\, historic tanks\, armored vehicles\, military artifacts and much more. \nThere is over 100\,000 square feet of space within the American Heritage Museum and Hangar combined. \nFood and beverage will be available for purchase on site and picnics are allowed. \nEvent Schedule\n9:00am – 5:00pm\nGates Open – All museum buildings and grounds open to visitors.\nAll re-enactor camps open to visitors with discussions and living history demonstrations all day. \n9:30am – 4:30pm\nWorld War II Tank & Half Track Rides & Driving – Tank Driving Area\nTank Driving Experiences and Tank Rides aboard the M4 Sherman\, M24 Chaffee\, & M36 Jackson WWII tanks and WWII M3 Half Track will be taking place all day! SUMMARY:History After Hours: First Battle of the Ironclads — USS Monitor Versus CSS Virginia with Michael Manning
DESCRIPTION:Join the American Heritage Museum for a special History After Hours presentation exploring one of the most consequential encounters in American naval history—a story with important origins here in Massachusetts. \nMuseum Hours: 5:00 p.m.–8:00 p.m. | Presentation: 6:00 p.m.–7:30 p.m.\nThe Boston Navy Yard in Charlestown\, located approximately 30 miles from the museum\, designed\, built\, and supported many notable American warships. Among them was the USS Merrimack\, one of six steam frigates ordered by the U.S. Navy in 1854. Combining traditional sails with a coal-fired steam engine and propeller\, these vessels represented an important transition between the Age of Sail and the age of mechanized naval warfare. \nThe Merrimack began the Civil War as a United States Navy vessel\, but she would later enter Confederate service under a new name: CSS Virginia. How could the same ship serve both sides during the same conflict? \nSenior Docent Michael Manning will reveal the remarkable chain of events that transformed the Merrimack into a Confederate ironclad and brought the CSS Virginia face-to-face with the revolutionary USS Monitor at the Battle of Hampton Roads in March 1862. \nThrough historic images\, maps\, and firsthand accounts\, Manning will examine the construction and capabilities of both vessels\, the dramatic two-day battle\, and the technological revolution that followed. Their confrontation marked the first combat between ironclad warships and demonstrated that the era of the wooden fighting ship was rapidly coming to an end. \nAbout the Speaker\nMichael Manning is a senior docent and historian with the American Heritage Museum and the Collings Foundation. He has volunteered with the organization for more than 12 years. \nManning’s professional background is in engineering\, with a concentration in energy and transportation. Outside the museum\, he leads tours along several segments of the Boston Harborwalk. Since 2015\, he has served as chairperson of the Friends of the Boston Harborwalk. \nHe is also an advisor to the USS Constitution Museum at the Charlestown Navy Yard and an original member of The Pursuit of History\, the organization behind the annual History Camp program. \nImportant Visitor Information\nThis program is a seated multimedia presentation in the American Heritage Museum’s Pacific War Gallery. DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, September 12th and Sunday\, September 13th from 9:00am to 5:00pm for Historic Aviation Weekend at the American Heritage Museum! \nEach day will be full of history in the skies and on the ground! Throughout each day\, a number of aviation historians and pilots will be featured as they cover amazing stories from the past and present of aviation. Make sure to see the daily flying demonstrations with several of the aircraft from our collection taking to the skies from our beautiful grass airfield. This is your opportunity to get a close look at the aircraft that made history and learn more about the pilots and personalities around them. Some of the aircraft that will be flying include the Waco UIC – Pearl Harbor Survivor\, Tuskegee Airmen PT-17 Stearman Trainer\, Okinawa L-5 Sentinel\, German Fieseler Fi-156 Storch and AT-6 Texan fighter trainer. \nThis year’s event will also commemorate the 25th Anniversary of the Attacks of September 11\, 2001 on New York City and Washington DC. Each day will feature a presentation from Maj. Heather “Lucky” Penney\, USAF (Ret.) who was one of two F-16 pilots of the DC Air National Guard who were sent to intercept United Flight 93 on\, what could have been\, a one-way mission. Maj. Penney will describe her experiences that day and how America’s air defense strategy has changed and continues to evolve since then. \nAll three museums will be open: The American Heritage Museum\, The Historic Aviation Hangar and Classic Automobile Barn. DESCRIPTION:Join the American Heritage Museum for a special History After Hours presentation with Captain Mike Penn\, a former U.S. Navy fighter pilot\, Vietnam War prisoner of war\, airline pilot\, and author of Hope and Courage. \nMuseum Hours: 5:00 p.m.–8:00 p.m. | Presentation: 6:00 p.m.–7:30 p.m.\nPenn dreamed of becoming a military aviator from an early age. After completing college and earning his commission\, he entered the demanding world of naval aviation\, where discipline\, teamwork\, leadership\, and attention to detail were essential to survival. His career would ultimately test those qualities under circumstances few could imagine. \nDuring the Vietnam War\, Penn was shot down\, captured\, and imprisoned in North Vietnam. He spent eight months as a prisoner of war in the infamous “Hanoi Hilton\,” enduring isolation\, physical abuse\, fear\, and uncertainty. Through communication\, teamwork\, faith\, and a determination never to give up\, Penn and his fellow prisoners found ways to resist despair and preserve their sense of purpose. \nIn this deeply personal presentation\, Penn will share the story of his captivity and the lessons he carried home. He will discuss how hope\, courage\, attitude\, and deliberate choices can help people confront even the most overwhelming obstacles. His experience demonstrates how ordinary individuals can summon extraordinary resilience when circumstances demand it. \nPenn will also discuss his book\, Hope and Courage\, which transforms the lessons of captivity into a broader examination of perseverance and the human capacity to overcome adversity. More than a wartime memoir\, the book explores how people can respond to hardship with conviction\, recover from setbacks\, and continue moving forward when success appears impossible. \nThis special evening offers an opportunity to hear an extraordinary firsthand account of service\, sacrifice\, survival\, and the enduring strength of the human spirit. \nAbout the Presenter\nCaptain Mike Penn served nine years on active duty with the United States Navy and an additional three years in the Navy Reserve. During his naval aviation career\, he was recognized as a Distinguished Naval Graduate\, a leading dive bomber pilot\, and a top carrier-landing aviator aboard the USS Ranger. Following his release from captivity\, he became the first returning military aviator from Vietnam to fly again. \nPenn left military service in 1978 and began a long career in commercial aviation. He became an airline pilot and served as a chief pilot for Southwest Airlines\, where he supervised hundreds of pilots and applied the principles of leadership\, teamwork\, professionalism\, and positive attitude that had shaped his military service. He later became a professional speaker\, sharing his POW experience and its lessons with audiences around the world. \nImportant Visitor Information\nGuests should plan to arrive at least 10 minutes before the presentation begins at 6:00 p.m. \nHistory After Hours takes place on the first Thursday of each month\, opening the American Heritage Museum from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. for evening admission and special programming. SUMMARY:Battle for the Airfield WWII Re-Enactment Weekend
DESCRIPTION:The American Heritage Museum presents the Battle for the Airfield World War II Re-Enactment\, one of the premier events of its type in the United States! There will be over 350+ re-enactors representing several branches of Allied and Axis military participating in encampments and two battles each day. Fully restored military equipment of all kinds will be on display and operating in a captivating living history event. Allied and Axis camps will be set up with authentic materials and appearance. Re-enactors act as docents who share a wealth of information about life as a WWII military person. WWII Veterans from all ranks and branches of service will participate in a roundtable discussion. \nGates open at 8:30am each day and close at 5:00pm. Battles take place at 11:00am and 3:00pm. The WWII Veterans Roundtable begins at 1:00pm in the hangar. \nAll three museums will be open: The American Heritage Museum\, The Historic Aviation Hangar and Classic Automobile Barn.
